HIST 101 – Roots of the West: Investigating the Past, Understanding the Present

This course explores the roots of Western civilization, examining the major political, social, economic, and cultural developments from the ancient Near East through the early modern period. Students will analyze primary and secondary sources to understand how ancient and medieval societies shaped the modern Western world. Topics include Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, the rise of Christianity and Islam, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Reformation. Rather than emphasizing memorization, the course develops historical thinking through inquiry, evidence, and interpretation.

A survey of Western Civilization from the Renaissance to the present. This course examines the major political, social, economic, and cultural developments that have shaped the modern Western world, including the Reformation, Scientific Revolution, Enlightenment, French Revolution, industrialization, imperialism, world wars, and contemporary issues.
